Today was a really tough day. As the unreasonable demands and personality clashes came to an all time low, it really got me thinking. If I were in a high powered position or came into some serious wealth, would I remain humble or turn into one of these pretentious characters who frivolously spend shareholder dollars to merely appease their thirst for living the high life, at someone else expense?
Ok I’d be lying if I said there haven’t been times where I’ve blown my own trumpet and quite literally felt my ego barometer propel off the charts. Looking back though it had more to do with a much younger version of me trying to find herself in the big crazy world. So my level of arrogance could perhaps be excused. Fast forward a couple of decades and I can safely say that I am the most unpretentious person walking this earth.
Thanks to the likes of Sarah Blakely’s (founder of Spanx) I am hopeful that there are successful people out there that have maintained their humility. I loved Sarah’s response in a recent interview when asked whether her wealth (she’s the world’s youngest self-made female billionaire) had changed her in any way. Her response was, if you were a generous person before you had money, you become even more generous. Hence her decision to part with more than half of her empire by donating it back to the community. Now that’s what I call serious humility!
The world needs more Sarah Blakely’s. This woman is so grounded and genuine, I look forward to meeting or working for someone of her stature.
